This aerial view of Island Grove and surrounding areas shows the old Glad Tidings Church (far left) and the Dyer Memorial Library (across the street). The park department is directly across the pond. The Memorial Bridge is 300 feet long. The western end of the bridge connects Wilson Street to Island Grove. Life-sized bronze figures of a Civil War soldier and sailor adorn the Memorial Arch. It was erected in 1912 during the bicentennial celebration. The 11-foot bronze eagle was designed by Bela Lyon Pratt, who is also responsible for the sculpture outside the Boston Public Library.
Nash’s Drug Store was located in the Abington Savings Bank building in Abington Center. Some people still remember Erickson’s store, located at the corner of Orange and Washington Streets. A. Erickson is shown c. 1920 with K. Kierstead. The store sold newspapers and penny candy. Blanchard’s Market had an address of 506 Washington Street. Originally Samuel Colson’s shoe factory, the house is thought to have been built in 1850 or earlier. The Blanchard family moved into the house from West Abington when they opened the store in the 1880s.
His father, Dr. George L. Whiting, and his wife, Pamela Whiting, proudly look on. Pat McKenna swore the fire chief into office. The dedication of Abington’s fire bell took place at the North Abington firehouse in 1880. The fire bell was recast from an original bell that hung in Faneuil Hall in Boston. The 1,100-pound bell is now at the Dyer Memorial Library. The smaller bell, weighing 400 pounds, is now on the front lawn of the fire station on Bedford Street. A gift from Madeline Stone, this photograph was found at the Dyer Memorial Library.
