During this sure-to-be-controversial publication, Randy Thornhill and Craig Palmer use evolutionary biology to give an explanation for the explanations of rape and to suggest new methods to its prevention. in keeping with Thornhill and Palmer, developed version of a few variety offers upward push to rape; the most evolutionary query is whether or not rape is an version itself or a derivative of different diversifications. whatever the resolution, Thornhill and Palmer word, rape circumvents a principal function of women's reproductive approach: mate selection. this can be a basic this is because rape is devastating to its sufferers, particularly younger ladies. Thornhill and Palmer tackle, and declare to demolish scientifically, many myths approximately rape bred through social technological know-how idea during the last twenty-five years. the preferred competition that rapists usually are not influenced by means of sexual hope is, they argue, scientifically faulty. even supposing they argue that rape is organic, Thornhill and Palmer don't view it as inevitable. Their techniques for rape prevention contain educating younger men to not rape, punishing rape extra seriously, and learning the effectiveness of "chemical castration." additionally they suggest that younger ladies ponder the organic factors of rape while making judgements approximately gown, visual appeal, and social actions. Rape may well stop to exist, they argue, basically in a society familiar with its evolutionary factors. The e-book incorporates a valuable precis of evolutionary thought and a comparability of evolutionary biology's and social science's motives of human habit. The authors argue for the larger explanatory energy and functional usefulness of evolutionary biology. The ebook is certain to fan the flames of dialogue either at the particular subject of rape and at the higher problems with how we comprehend and impression human habit.

We two authors, having debated this question for more than a decade (Palmer 1991, 1992a,b; Thornhill and Thornhill 1992a,b), agree that it may eventually be answered by determining whether or not rape is the result of special-purpose psychological mechanisms that motivate and regulate men's pursuit of rape in itself. We also agree that enough now is known about the ultimate evolutionary causes of human rape that an evolutionary approach can contribute significantly to prevention of the act. But how can an ultimate explanation of why men rape help prevent future rapes?

Such claims are simply inconsistent with modern knowledge of how inheritance and development work. Gregor Mendel discovered the role of genes in inheritance, but of course he did not discover inheritance itself. That like begets like was known long before Mendel. Parent-offspring resemblance in socially learned behavior requires psychological mechanisms—mechanisms that are produced by gene-environment interaction during development. Innate behavior, learned behavior, and cultural behavior are all products of brains.

But how can an ultimate explanation of why men rape help prevent future rapes? The answer is that ultimate evolutionary explanations have unique power in both a theoretical and a practical sense. In terms of theory, only selection can account for the creation and the maintenance of adaptations. Even complete identification of all proximate causes of an adaptation could not explain the genesis and the persistence of that adaptation. However, an ultimate explanation of a biological phenomenon can account for all proximate causes influencing the phenomenon, whether the phenomenon is an adaptation or an incidental effect of an adaptation.
